Altenwerder

Photo 1 of 2

The borough of Altenwerder is a ghost town. Since the borough is situated in the port expansion area, the inhabitants were relocated starting in the 1960's and the buildings torn down to make way for new port terminals. The last inhabitants left in 1998.

The only building left is the church, including a small cemetery, now wedged in between the Autobahn, huge wind turbines and the Container Terminal Altenwerder, where fully automated cranes and trucks move containers onto and off ships without the need for human operators. This new and highly efficient industrial ghost town - though buzzing with activity - eerily mirrors today's lifelessness of the old borough.
